One day, when Miranda takes Martine to the doctor’s office, she walks into a down-renters meeting and she is appalled. Being a gothic novel, of course sinister events which will change her completely begin to unfold. But that resemblance was shattered as soon as Nicholas Van Ryn appeared.
Nicholas’ corpulent and lazy wife, Johanna, sees Miranda as a threat, and tries to keep her from her husband. Ultimately, the book was not at all what I expected, and the author broke a lot of rules that romance novelists follow these days, but I enjoyed reading it.
The main dragonwyckk, Miranda, is dfagonwyck a silly and, seemingly, stupid girl who never seems to be able to make sense out of her predicament of marrying a psychopath.
Miranda as a character never really fits in anywhere. It’s only when his twisted desires, his super-sized ego is thwarted that the mask of humanity comes off and his inner demon is revealed.
She is young, naive, in love with everything money can buy and a bit in love with herself. I will be remembered it long. Taking place along the area of the Hudson River and NYC, the book evoked a setting that was both familiar and beautiful. I was also bothered by the number of authors that are trotted out, Fenimore Cooper, Herman Melville, Edgar Allen Poe; for no reason whatsoever.
Suffice to say that Nicholas wasn’t in his best mood. At the Fourth of July celebration, Miranda finds herself dancing with Nicholas, as she had hoped to do, when a guest falls on the slippery floor and the music comes to an end for her.

I loved the book as a girl. Dragonwyck can sometimes be a little predictable but the author’s delicious writing style, the historical research and the wonderful characterization make this book special. Many people told rdagonwyck that it was in the style of Rebecca and Jane Eyre, so it seemed a natural to me. I always had a soft spot for Gothic novels like Rebecca and Jane Eyre, dragnowyck Dragonwyck seemed like a must read to me, especially when a brooding and mysterious character like Nicholas Van Ryn is involved.
A sociopath, however, while still lacking a conscience, looks, acts, and seems like any other person. Everybody has some dark sides.
Book ratings by Goodreads. Her constant mulling over her husband and wonderings of why he isn’t nice to her are enough to drive anyone crazy. Somehow, I was expecting a different end. And I was ready to setoj shed of him much sooner than was the case!
Billy Pigg, the celebrated Northumbrian piper played ‘Derwentwater’s Farewell’ especially for her. But it is an enjoyable read all the same.
The writing lacks the rich language used by du Maurier, so much so that it reminds me of reading a YA book. She presents historical figures ie Poe and places them naturally and correctly in her anyaa giving them more than a cameo appearance. But she also finds a household whose nerves are stretched to breaking point, and haunted by the van Ryn family history, and her arrival — innocent though it may be — becomes the catalyst for tragedy.
