I really appreciated that author, Eliot Schrefer, did not idealize the efforts to save endangered species or simplify the complex problems in wartorn, poverty ridden Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Sophie is spending the summer with schrefef mother, staying at her bonobo sanctuary in the Congo. At first she stays with other bonobos, but eventually she has to leave them too and sets out on a difficult journey to find her mother who had been releasing bonobos back into the wild in another part of the country when the war began.


Luckily, she has Otto, and the other bonobos, as her protectors.

This book was okay overall. The fact that both her future and those of the bonobos hang in the balance doubles the stakes in this taut drama. The book touches on many issues, first and foremost how humans treat animals such as bonobos.

While recognizing the plight of the humans, endahgered will also care about what happens to these peaceful animals. There are no concrete data on population numbers, but the estimate is between 29, and 50, individuals.
